A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars.

But because they only have a finite capacity, this trapped soot periodically has to be emptied or 'burned off' to regenerate the DPF.

This regeneration process cleanly burns off the excess soot deposited in the filter, reducing the harmful exhaust emission and helps to prevent the tell-tale black smoke you used to see from diesel vehicles, particularly when accelerating.

 A diesel particulate filter check has been part of the MOT tes since February 2014. If a filter has been removed, the car will fail its MOT. 

 If the DPF is becoming clogged with soot or a fault develops in the system, an orange light will typically appear on the dashboard 

 They usually look like a piped box that has dots in the middle, sometimes even an engine management light although they can slightly vary by manufacturer manufacturer – check your handbook for more information. 

You may feel a lack of power or the car will possibly be in 'limp mode' at times, you may also see a particulate filter or anti-pollution warning on the dash.

Short journeys at low speeds are the prime cause of blocked diesel particulate filters.

Other things that are bad for DPFs include poor servicing.

A diesel particulate filter on a poorly serviced car may fail sooner than a well maintained one, generally, they should last for at least 100,000 miles.

It’s important you use the right type of oil as well – some oils contain additives that can actually block filters.

Performance modifications can damage a diesel particulate filter, as can using low-quality fuel and even running the car frequently on a low fuel level as the car may avoid DPF regeneration in order to save fuel.

There are a lot of components and sensors that need to be in full working order for the DPF to be working effectively, these will all be checked during our diagnosis process.

The filter only really needs cleaning once it reaches a certain level (manufacturers vary) and cannot not be cleared manually, once cleaned our engineers will advise you on the best way to keep it running effectively.

If the vehicle is primarily used for short runs it will require attention sooner than one that is used for long journeys.

we suggest having a DPF health check every 15-20,000 miles (dependant on driving style) this way you can pick up on any potential faults or blockages ahead of time and prevent costly bills.

• A full DPF clean, this consists of a pre clean diagnostic to assess weather your DPF is actually blocked or to identify if it is a different issue, if everything checks out then we will begin the cleaning process which will take around 90 mins from start to finish (dependant on vehicle/DPF location)

If we find the DPF does not require or cannot be cleaned until an underlying issue has been resolved for example, you will only be charged for the health check.

• A DPF health check, in this we check all the live data from the exhaust system and relevant sensors to ensure they are working correctly, we will also check the soot content level where available and advise you on your next steps to prevent issues and blockages going forward.
• A code reading/clearing service, here we will read and record all error codes stored in the system, we will send you a copy for your own records. Not all codes can be cleared as it may need further diagnosis/repairs to be removed. 
• Basic servicing, we will replace your air filter, oil filter and oil at a competitive price.
